28 HongKong Street

by URBAN JOURNEY

BOAT QUAY – With no signage, no social media pages and no marketing so to speak of, you might think that 28 HongKong Street would be a very well kept secret, but actually this place is one of the best known bars in the city now that they’ve won the top spot in the Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2016 list. Finding it may be a bit tricky as it lies behind a nondescript, unmarked door, but it’s worth searching out for its buzzy ambiance and bespoke cocktails.

Why you should come here:

28 HongKong Street was named Asia’s #1 bar for good reason, as the cocktails here are simply superb. The shelves behind the bar are lined with artisanal spirits, many of which come from America, so there is a decent representation of craft bourbons, ryes and rums. The bartenders also have on hand a variety of fresh organic ingredients and homemade syrups and bitters that they use to create unique flavour combinations. And should you get hungry, their gourmet bar bites are also top-notch.

What we love:

Despite having a reputation as a trendy hipster speakeasy-style spot, the atmosphere at 28HK lacks any pretension. It’s pretty casual and cozy with dim lighting, small tables for intimate drinks and chats, and a long marble-topped bar where you can strike up a convo with one of the friendly bartenders. The service is good, and they always seem to have cool tunes playing, which definitely adds to the vibe. Trying the tipples is a given, but whatever you do, grab yourself some truffle mac ‘n’ cheese balls too!

UJ Tidbit:

Make a reservation. Even before they made the Asia’s 50 Best Bars list, 28 HongKong Street was pretty busy, but now you’d lucky be to snag even standing space on a walk-in basis. Also keep in mind that no flash photography is allowed inside the space.

Damage:

Cocktails go for about $22++.
