Bars and Nightlife

CBD - Singaporeans can now get back to their roots (quite literally) while imbibing in bespoke beverages at Native, a new cocktail bar on Amoy Street that focuses on only local and regional ingredients and booze. Here you’ll find Southeast Asian spirits like Chalong Bay Rum, Ceylon Arrack and Singapore’s own Paper Lantern Sichuan Pepper Gin mixed up with unique regional roots, fruits, spices and herbs, some of which have been foraged close by like pink jasmine, turmeric and wild curry leaves.

Why you should come here:

Everything about the space and the menu screams local, from the mural depicting orang laut (seafarers), the candles and ceramic cups made by local artisans, and the bottles, mixers and garnishes sourced from here or other countries in Asia. Plus, owner and bartender Vijay Mudaliar is no stranger to his craft. In 2015 he won the Diplomatico World Tournament Singapore Final with his Jewel of the East cocktail made with local ingredients like sweet potato compote, pandan, cardamom and cinnamon, which is a testament to his ingenuity and commitment to Southeast Asian flavours.

What we love:

The drinks here take the handcrafted cocktail craze to the next level, as they make use of flavour combos you’ve probably never dreamed of putting together and cutting edge techniques that add a level of sophistication to each sip. Take for example the Mango Lassi that starts with a layering of beetroot jelly and pomegranate molasses topped with a creamy concoction of seasonal Indian mangos, housemade yogurt whey, and Amrut Old Port rum, and then topped with pistachio foam and curried pistachios.

UJ Tidbit:

If you’re feeling brave, go for the already infamous Antz cocktail made with Thai Chalong Bay rum, coconut yogurt, aged sugar cane, salt-baked tapioca and soursop topped with a frozen basil leaf sprinkled with basil meringue and Thai ants. We dare you to eat every last ant.

Keep an eye out for the new menu coming out in March, because Vijay is currently working on new recipes that feature more sustainable foraged ingredients.

Cocktails range between $19 and $23.
