Resham Melwani: Designer of ReshamM and Nocturnal

Resham Melwani’s early forays into fashion design were once hobbies.

Often on the way home from her graphic design job, she would stop at fabric shops to pick out silks, sequins, cotton and what-have-you-nots as material for her own tops. Over time, her hobby turned into passion, and before long, her label ReshamM was born and bouyed by a well-received fashion exhibition.

Fashion design to Melwani is more than just geometry and Leonardo da Vinci’s golden ratio, she designs for the emotions. She says, “Emotion triggers themes for my [fashion] lines.” Such as Eye of the Nile, invoking images of women coming into their confidence; Love and Hate Should Never Collide, a tapestry of loving and hating at once; and Aphrodites Allure, for the sensual and confident woman.

Her latest project, Nocturnal, is the same. For  inspiration, Melwani looked back on her time in London. “Walking down the street in a bright, yellow dress for the resort just didn’t seem right,” she states. In keeping with Big Ben’s mood, she created Nocturnal – a series of edgy, futuristic and sophisticated city wear.

The first series, Darkness Meets Light, is about finding hope and light after going through a dark period (see examples from The Dark Series), while The Light Series (retailing at Retail Therapy) is its opposite with a palette of pinks, nudes and metallics.

Melwani explains, “It’s the year of the Rabbit and one of the elements is metal. So I’ve used many metallics with light reflecting components, pinks, silvers, iridescent sequins and fluttering butterflies.”
