Dempsey Hill is re-emerging as one of our favourite places to hang. Not only is it home to our favourite butcher (Huber’s), the all-new COMO development, and a smattering of top restaurants, its latest arrival, Carrotsticks & Cravings, has got us excited about healthy eating again. And we reckon this cute cafe channelling laid-back Aussie vibes and championing clean eats is exactly what Dempsey (and Singapore!) needs more of.
Why you should come here:
Tucked away in a quiet pocket of the Dempsey ‘hood, the setting is perfect for lazy breakfasts and languorous lunching. But the real draw here is the food. Singapore has been crying out for cafes that know how to do healthy eating minus the rabbit food and predictable salad combos. And Carrotsticks has smashed it with its delicious menu serving up fresh, hearty plates that deliver on flavour and portion size. We tried the avo toast (perfectly ripe fruit atop a slice of sourdough and topped with two poached eggs, ham, spinach, feta, and dukkah), the ‘manwich’ (a special of the day comprising two slabs of sourdough filled with melted cheese, thick slices of ham, and a generous smear of fresh pesto), plus a gluten and refined-sugar free chocolate cake, and some energy balls. The food verdict? Everything. Was. Delicious. Plates were licked clean and we’ve already selected breakfast for our next visit (the organic acai breakfast bowl, in case you were wondering). We also experienced really friendly and efficient service despite the place being rammed due to a pop-up farmer’s market.
What we love:
The decor is white, whimsy, and chic. The cafe itself is small and all the seating is al fresco, so come prepared to sit outside. Thankfully, all the tables are in the shade and there are fans aplenty; we visited around 11.30am and were perfectly comfortable sitting in the open air. The coffee here is also ridiculously good (we ended up re-ordering three times). But our favourite thing, without question, is the array of guilt-free sweet treats. From chocolate cakes and energy balls to raw desserts and gluten-free fruity muffins, the biggest issue is deciding what to order. Heck, we say get it all (it’s refined-sugar free, so totally fine, *ahem*!). Finally, whatever your diet, be it vegan, vegetarian, paleo, raw, gluten-free, refined-sugar free, we reckon you’ll find something at Carrosticks that is seriously tasty. And your die-hard carnivore pals will love it too.
Carrotsticks and Cravings originally started out as a blog, so if you like what you’re eating check out the website for a ton of healthy recipes you can whip up at home. It also runs cookery courses ranging from basics for beginners to dinner-party hosting, and there’s even a healthy cooking class for domestic helpers.
We popped by for breakfast, but the lunch menu looks equally tasty (think dukkah crusted chicken, avocado, tomato, spinach, and feta in an organic wholegrain chia wrap, green falafel bowls, and quinoa tarts with a side salad) and we’ll definitely be back to try that next time.
