MavRx Coffee Apothecary

by URBAN JOURNEY

You’ve got to love places that focus on one thing and do that thing really well, and MavRx Coffee Apothecary does exactly that with—you guessed it—coffee. This tiny little space goes large when it comes to strong, smooth blends served up with lashings of panache.

Why you should come here:

This coffee stop may be tiny, but the decor here is definitely Instagram-worthy with black and white tiles in geometric patterns on the counter and walls, and cool glass bottles and cups with bold statements in black and white like ‘Get Shit Done’ and ‘Eat Pray Coffee’.

The coffee comes from Allpress Espresso from Australia and changes depending on the season to include blends of beans from coffee-growing regions as far flung as Ethiopia, Guatemala and Sumatra. Behind the La Marzocco Strada machine the barista on duty will concoct caffeine creations like jolting espressos, silky smooth flat whites and cold brew coffees prepared using five different syringes.

What we love:

If they happen to have their chocolate waffle cones available, try the Piccolo White. It’s served with a strong ristretto shot of espresso and warm milk poured directly into the waffle cone, which is lined with dark chocolate that slowly melts into the coffee to create a sweet, velvety effect. It may be a tad pricey, but it’s pure heaven.

UJ Tidbit:

The space here is small with only one counter dominated by the espresso machine and various tools of the trade, and two benches along the wall. This is not the type of place you come to enjoy a coffee and chat with friends, but rather a grab-and-go type spot where you can get a caffeine fix when you’re in the Duxton Hill hood.

Damage:

Espressos go for $3, coffees and cold brews go for $5, and the Piccolo White rings in at $10.
