BUKIT TIMAH / ORCAHRD / TIONG BAHRU - Plain Vanilla Bakery was a pioneer in the cupcake movement that started sweeping across Singapore a few years back, and it didn’t take them long to develop a solid following of cupcake fanatics who rave about their classic and inspired flavours. Fun fact: owner Vanessa Kenchington was once a lawyer, but traded in long days of legal briefs for getting up at 5am every day to create luscious buttercream frostings and moist fluffy cakes.
Why you should come here:
If cupcakes are your jam, then this is your place. They’ve always got a ton of flavours on offer like the Milk Chocolate Banana, Strawberry White Chocolate and Salted Caramel, as well as tasty brownies, tarts and layer cakes, and each item is made with primo ingredients like French butter and Belgian chocolate. Grab a latte or a tropical fruit iced tea and settle in for little bit of morning or afternoon indulgence, or grab a box of six to take away and share with colleagues, family and friends.
What we love:
There are actually three different Plain Vanilla Bakery locales, so it makes it easy for us to get our sugar fix all around town. The Tiong Bahru locale is probably our favourite, as it has a really homey vibe with potted plants and bookshelves packed with all manner of cookbooks, coffee beans and baking supplies. If we had to choose just one cupcake as our favourite (and trust us, choosing just one is no easy task!), then it would have to be the super sexy Dark Chocolate Ganache.
Every month Plain Vanilla offers at least one specialty cupcake flavour just for that month, so be sure to check in with them to catch the latest offerings like Orange Passionfruit, Salted Ricotta and Nutella, or Coconut Gula Melaka.
