Wheeler’s Yard

by URBAN JOURNEY

BALESTIER – Part bicycle workshop, part cool cafe, Wheeler’s Yard is not your run-of-the-mill coffee and culinary hangout. This family-run spot is located in a warehouse in an industrial park, which gives it kind of an edgy vibe right from the get-go. Step inside the cavernous space and you will find plenty of custom-made bicycles and cycling accessories as well as wooden tables and sofas where you can grab coffees, all-day breakfast dishes, burgers and rice bowls.

Why you should come here:

First of all, the space is huge with soaring ceilings and plenty of space to spread out. Whether you’re sipping solo or with a large group, you definitely won’t feel claustrophobic here. Second of all, the decor is pretty cool with mix of industrial brick walls, hipster bicycles and vintage touches like model cars, superhero figurines and barber seats. If you’re looking to jazz up your Instagram feed, there are definitely some good photo ops here.

What we love:

The retro vibes and hipster bikes set the scene, and the roominess of the space makes this a great spot to chill out for a few hours with good friends or a good book. The food is pretty average with a few dishes that are better than the rest like the Spicy Bangers & Mash with a spicy Italian pork sausage, mashed potatoes, caramelized onions and sour cream, and the Teriyaki Salmon Rice Bowl with an onsen egg.

UJ Tidbit:

The food here is nothing to write home about, but the coffee is good and the atmosphere is pretty laid back. We suggest heading here for a few cuppas and perhaps a sweet treat or two. We hear their Red Velvet cupcakes are pretty fantastic.

Damage:

About $20++ to $30++ for a coffee and a meal.
