A Quick Guide to Yangon

by URBAN JOURNEY

Although no longer the capital of Myanmar (that title went to Naypyidaw in 2005), Yangon is the largest city in Myanmar and a fascinating mix of Burmese, British, Indian, Bengali and Chinese influences. Formerly known as Rangoon, the city is rich in golden pagodas, colonial architecture, meandering rivers and busy marketplaces. This cool mix of cultures, architecture and landscapes means there are plenty of interesting places to eat and drink, and you can already see that the new relaxed stance on foreigners is lending itself to a truly uniqu dining scene.

MUST DOs

Lucky Sevenis always packed with locals, which is a pretty good indication of its authenticity and quality. This famous tea house is cheap, clean and offers a true taste of Burmese food with specials like mohinga, pork curry and dumplings. The place has a more low-key vibe than Feel Restaurant, but the food is just as good.
