Singapore Sushi Spots We Love

Lately it seems like everywhere you look in the Lion City there’s a sushi joint peddling hand rolls and hamachi to the masses. You’ve had California rolls in the mall, tempura next to the river, and even unagi delivered right to your door. With so many options, it can be hard to separate the chutoro from the otoro. Well as always, UrbanJourney is here to help you suss out the best of the best, which is why we’ve put together our handy guide to some of our favorite Singapore sushi spots.

Coveted for its consistency, Akashi ticks all the right boxes with superb service, speedy delivery and great sushi at affordable prices. Their lunch and dinner sets are particularly good value for the money and you can choose from sushi or sashimi, tempura with soba noodles and sukiyaki served with rice, salad, soup and fresh fruit. You can’t go wrong with the URA Maki (Reverse Cali Roll) and the melt-in-your-mouth Salmon Belly Aburi Sushi.

Although quite a bit pricier than your average sushi joint, Tatsuya is worth every penny for Chef Ronnie Chia’s divine creations made with fresh ingredients sourced from different regions of Japan. To get the best of the best, try the ‘omakase’ style meal, which means you put yourself in the capable hands of Chef Ronnie and his Japanese chefs and let them surprise you with delectable bites like sweet Hokkaido scallops, savory sashimi of Arctic char from the Miyagi prefecture, purple sprouts from Fukuoka and their special Aburi (seared) sushi.

We love all of the seared sushi—the quick blast of heat adds a lovely texture and flavor to the fresh fish. Just ask for seared sushi and the chefs will serve you up an outstanding omakase style meal.

The Sushi Bar at Far East Plaza

It may look like nothing more than a tiny hole-in-the-wall shopping mall sushi joint, but pass The Sushi Bar at Far East Plaza by and you’ll be missing out on ridiculously fresh fish and fine meats artfully prepared with passion and priced just right. This is high-quality Japanese food without the pretentiousness and steep price tags, which is exactly why the place gets packed during peak hours.

The Salmon Aburi Sushi ($14.50) and Salmon Sashimi are to die for, and rotating specials like the Kagoshima So-Ho Black Wagyu beef, Negitoro Maki and Geoduck mean there is always something new and delicious to try.

Koh Sushi

Located in Wisma Atria’s Food Republic, this bustling spot offers excellent Japanese cuisine made with fresh quality ingredients from around the world. Grab a seat at the bar and dig into flavorful yakitori like the Nasu Miso Yaki (grilled eggplant with sweet miso sauce), signature rolls like the Shiok Maki (avocado, unagi and salmon drizzled with mayo and tobiko) and fine fish dishes like the swordfish and tuna Carpaccio.

Koh Sushi is known for its Shiok Maki, but we much prefer the Shiok Next Generation—instead of eel you get juicy plump prawns. Be sure to ask for the sauce on the side.
