June is already shaping up to be a phenomenal month for foodies with a slew ofnew spotsopening up in all sorts ofhoodsacross the island. In this issue of New Restaurant Intel, we take a look at classy and casualcafeswhere you can grab mind-blowing coffee andbrunches, contemporary Chinese spots taking traditional dishes to the next level, a hip and happeningwine bar, and enticing eateries offering up seafood, Spanish tapas, and good ol’ comfort food. One thing’s for sure you’re going to need to take your belt out a few notches with all this insanely good food and drink on offer.

Clan Cafe

Clan Cafe, Singapore

Classy, contemporary, and offering up killer Papa Palheta coffee and nourishing nosh, Clan Cafe is an elegant new addition to the stylish Straits Clan members club. The cafe is open to the public and oh-so-inviting with Peranakan-inspired tiles, a bright floral mural, and comfy chairs perfect for chilling out or talking business. The menu includes all-day dishes like the miso salmon grain bowl and otah sandwich with mackerel, prawn and comte on brioche, while bevvies range from homemade kombucha to artisan teas, craft beers, and cocktails.

Greenwood Fish Market Valley Point

Seafood fanatics will be happy to know that Greenwood Fish Market has opened another locale in Valley Point Shopping Centre and it’s pretty freaking sweet. The spacious dining room has plenty of room to spread out, so you can gather your gang and dig into shared small plates like oysters on ice, fried calamari, and pan-seared scallops, plus platters of seafood plucked fresh from the displays and cooked to order. They also have a retail section with superb seafood to go, a sashimi counter, and a wine shop on site.

The Guild

The Guild, Singapore

Just down the road from our UJ headquarters at The Working Capitol on Keong Saik Road is The Guild, a much-welcome homey addition to the hood. The joint is a collaboration between the Young Master Brewery and chef Vinny Lauria (of Hong Kong group Homegrown Foods) and it offers up comfort food made with locally sourced produce along with independent craft beers and natural wines. The grand opening is on June 9th, so be sure to stop in for a drink and swoon-worthy bites like the creamy mac ‘n’ cheese and buffalo wings.

Restaurant Ibid

First-ever MasterChef Asia winner Woo Lai Leong has finally opened his own restaurant on North Canal Road, and we can’t wait to get in there to sample his Nanyang-style cuisine inspired by his Chinese-Singaporean roots. The tasteful shophouse space features a wall of wooden Chinese medicine drawers, stand-alone tables, and a long bar where you can watch the chef and his team whip up inspired dishes like the white radish porridge and beef short rib with black garlic, black fungus, and dehydrated pear.

Tapas 26

If you liked the authentic Spanish fare at La Ventana but found it a bit too formal, then you’ll love Tapas 26, a new venture down the road by the same team. The atmosphere is casual and fun, and head chef Patxi Alvarez has put together an easy-going menu of tapas like the tuna tartare with pickled cucumber and coriander and the crispy poached egg with cepes cream and chanterelles. Heartier fare includes paellas and charcoal-grilled seafood and meats, and you’ll want to save room for desserts like the deconstructed lemon tart with lemon ginger sorbet.

Winederlust

New to the eclectic Wanderlust Hotel is Winederlust, a casual wine bar offering up 300 labels of vino in a cosy environment that welcomes expert oenophiles and newbies to the wine world alike. Pair your wines with tasty bites like the fried coconut tiger prawns, cheese and charcuterie platters, and 12-hour sous vide pork belly. Be sure to check in with their social media accounts because they often have special events like jazz nights, wine buffets, guest chef dinners, and food and wine pairing workshops.

Yellow Pot

Situated in the brand-spanking new Six Senses Duxton hotel, Yellow Pot is a sleek spot where diners can indulge in modern Chinese creations. Start at the bar with light snacks like the lemongrass pork sliders and an Asian-inspired cocktail made with fresh botanicals. Afterwards, move into the dining room for family-style shared dishes like the crispy Sichuan chicken and barramundi with ginger-scallion pesto. They also have a great selection of fine Chinese teas and fine wines.

40 Hands East Coast

Hey, EastEnders—you now have a stellar spot to get your caffeine fix with the opening of 40 Hands in the Katong hood. This funky little spot is done up in edgy murals and checkered tiles and offers up the same quality coffee that has been drawing in java junkies to the flagship Tiong Bahru cafe since 2010. You’ll find some of the same great eats on the menu like the smashed avo toast and pesto chicken panini along with new additions like the ‘stinky’ har Cheong Gai waffle with shrimp paste batter fried chicken, sambal maple syrup, and a sunny side up egg.
