Sky-high sips at Singapore's best rooftop bars

It’s no secret that Singapore boasts some of the most spectacular rooftop bars on the planet. After all, this is home to the world’s highest al fresco bar (1-Altitude) and the world’s highest urban craft brewery (LeVel33). Not to mention the ton of swanky clubs atop skyscrapers, chilled out rooftop lounges, and hidden gems squirreled away on the top levels of heritage shophouses. In fact, no matter which Singapore hood you hit up, you’ll find an al fresco bar offering great views and breezy vibes to go with your drinks. We’ve narrowed down some of our favourite rooftop hangouts for all types of scenic scenarios from after-work drinks in the CBD to romantic dates, lively ladies’ nights, and everything in between.

Best place to take an out-of-towner: 1-Altitude

Perched 282 metres up on the 63rd level of One Raffles Place, 1-Altitude Gallery & Bar is the highest al fresco bar in the world. Unsurprisingly, this soaring spot offers stupendous views of Singapore’s skyline, which makes it an ideal place to wine and dine out-of-town guests. Grab a daybed next to the glass barrier and indulge in fine wines, cocktails, and gourmet bar bites, then hit up the dance floor for live beats until late.

Best one-for-one happy hour: Kinki

It may not be the loftiest rooftop bar in town, but Kinki wins big points for its edgy underground vibes, fab views of Marina Bay, and awesome happy hour deals. Swing by between 5pm and 8pm any night of the week and you can grab one-for-one beers, wine, and select spirits. Fuel up on innovative Japanese cuisine like the foie gras unagi maki and crispy pork belly with spicy goma sauce.

Best for sundowners: Ce La Vi

Formerly known as Ku De Ta, this sleek spot on the 57th level of Marina Bay Sands has no competitors fighting for its exclusive views, which means you get a 360-degree panorama of Singapore’s bay area. It goes without saying that the sunset vistas are sublime. Chilled martinis and beats flow along with shared Asian plates, and the party keeps going until the wee hours of the morning.

Ce La Vi, 1 Bayfront Avenue, SkyPark at Marina Bay Sands, Tower 3, #57-01 Singapore 018971. p. +65 6508 2188. Open daily 12pm - late.

Best for a date: Lantern

With soft lighting, layered drapes, a 25-metre pool, and killer views of Marina Bay, Lantern is the first word in style and romance. Start with a house sling or barrel-aged cocktail at the circular bar, then move to one of the soft sofas for more convo over a bottle of bubbles and classed-up comfort food eats like the parmesan truffle fries, mini wagyu beef burgers, and Peking duck pancakes.

Best craft cocktails: Spago Bar & Lounge

On one side you have the ocean spread out before you and on the other side the city skyline provides a background for Marina Bay Sand’s famous rooftop infinity pool. Welcome to Spago Bar & Lounge, a chic rooftop terrace that does divine handcrafted cocktails. Our fave is the Forbidden Kiss with fresh raspberries, rose elixir, and lemon. They also do classic cocktails by the carafe and tropical punch bowls for two.

Spago Bar & Lounge, 10 Bayfront Ave, Sands SkyPark, Tower 2, Level 57, Singapore 018956. p. +65 6688 8888. Open Mon - Fri 6pm - 10pm, Sun 6pm - 11pm

Best aperitivo hour: Lavo

Aperitivo hour is just one of the draws at this swanky Italian-inspired lounge with a beautiful outdoor terrace on the 57th floor of Marina Bay Sands. Come between 5pm and 7pm for one-for-one cocktails like the Dragon Spritz, a modern take on the Aperol spritz made with fresh dragon fruit. When happy hour ends, head inside for hearty Italian-American eats. As the night goes on the music gets louder and dancers start busting out moves.

Best for seafood and sparkling wine: Southbridge

Set next to the Singapore River on the rooftop of a heritage shophouse in Boat Quay, Southbridge specialises in freshly shucked oysters, which go for just $20++ for a half dozen from 5pm to 8pm every weeknight. And of course nothing pairs better with oysters than a glass of champagne or prosecco. If you’re still feeling peckish after the oysters, the tuna tataki and garlic prawn skewers are also addictive.

Southbridge, 80 Boat Quay, Level 5, Singapore 049868. p. +65 6877 6965. Open daily 5pm - 12am

Best for pre-party drinks: The Rooftop at 1919 Waterboat House

This intimate second-floor spot sits on top of what was once a lookout tower in the historic 1919 Waterboat House and offers laid-back vibes with slightly different views of MBS and the bay than other rooftop locales offer. Mojitos and muddled cocktails are a great start, followed by shared plates like charcuterie, pizzas, and spicy buffalo wings. Get there before 7pm for one-for-one drinks.

Best for unique views of the city: Mr. Stork

Even though we’ll probably never tire of bird’s-eye views of Marina Bay, Mr. Stork offers a refreshingly different urban scene from the top of the Andaz Singapore hotel. Head up to the 39th floor and you’ll find a lovely garden space with a brass pavilion bar, cool tee-pee loungers, and expansive vistas of the city spread out below. We suggest rocking up early to snag seats right along the edges for the best views.

Best for beers with the boys after work: LeVel33

The world’s highest craft brewery is also a sophisticated lounge and restaurant where you can sip craft beers straight from the source while gazing out at the city skyline. The huge copper kettles that sit centre stage and warm wood tones give the space an inviting ambiance that’s conducive to chilled after-work drinks. Grab a house porter or IPA and tuck into bites like the beer-battered hake and sizzling prawns.

Best for bangin’ G&Ts: Artemis Grill

High above the hustle and bustle of the CBD sits Artemis Grill, a contemporary spot with a sprawling outdoor terrace on the rooftop of CapitaGreen. It’s all about organic, sustainable produce here, and this extends to the killer collection of gin and tonics. Try the Ki No Be with apple chips and micro shiso or the Copperhead with grapefruit and rosemary. Even better, G&Ts go for just $15++ at happy hour between 3pm and 7pm daily.

Best for live music: The Mad Men Attic Bar

Although the name may suggest a sophisticated spot for salary men to schmooze, the reality is Mad Men Attic Bar is utterly unpretentious. The decor is urban-industrial with cement floors and graffiti lining the walls, the drinks are very reasonably priced, and live bands and DJs hit the stage every night of the week. This is a pretty awesome spot to let loose after a long day at work. Oh, and did we mention the sick CBD views?

The Mad Men Attic Bar, 11 North Canal Road #03-02, Singapore 048824. p. +65 6222 3529. Open Mon - Wed 5pm - 1am, Thurs 5pm - 2am, Fri - Sat 5pm - 3am

Best hidden gem: Sum Yi Tai

Sporting 1980s Hong Kong vibes, Sum Yi Tai is hidden away in a three-storey shophouse in the heart of the CBD. Although each level is all sorts of cool, our favourite is the cosy rooftop bar. Here you’ll find comfy wicker furniture, decorative screens, and a bar serving up everything from rare Japanese whiskies to Asian-inspired cocktails. Note that seating is limited, so resos are essential.

Sum Yi Tai, 25 Boon Tat Street, Singapore 069622. p. +65 6221 3665. Open Mon - Fri 11:30am - 2:30pm, 5pm - 1am, Sat 7pm - 1am

Best for tiki-style tipples: Potato Head Rooftop Bar

Awash in hanging plants and twinkling fairy lights, the rooftop bar at Potato Head Singapore is a great little spot to soak up the city views and tropical atmosphere. The bar takes inspiration from tiki bar culture with fruity concoctions like the Pulp Fusion with pineapple liqueur, dark rum, lime juice, sugar syrup, and cilantro and the Chendol #36 with pandan-infused bourbon, coconut milk, aromatic bitters, and gula melaka.

Best for Asian ambiance: Lin Rooftop Bar

Lin may not have the best city skyline views, but it makes up for it with chic oriental decor and contemporary menus with Asian twists. Try the Princess Lotus cocktail with vodka, mint, and grapefruit syrup, liqueur, and wedges. Tapas include the cereal calamari wings, chilli crab dip with manto, and popcorn chicken tossed in five spice powder.

Best for an easy-going night out: The Bar Above

Not many people know about this secret rooftop spot, but if you’re looking for a cosy place for leisurely drinks, The Bar Above should definitely be on your radar. Grab a bite to eat at Pho Stop downstairs, then head upstairs for cocktails and icy cold beers. The open-air patio offers great views of the surrounding shophouses and skyscrapers, and in case of bad weather there’s an intimate bar inside.

The Bar Above, 72 Tanjong Pagar Road, Singapore 088493. p. +65 6534 8178. Open Mon - Thurs 6pm - 12am, Fri - Sat 6pm - 2am
