Bornga |

STAR VISTA & VIVO CITY - Bornga is a wildly popular Korean BBQ chain with 40 different outlets in five different countries including China, the United States, Singapore and Indonesia, with the bulk being in Korea. Behind it is Korean celebrity chef Jon Wong Paik, whose secret meat marinades have set this DIY empire apart from the masses. At the Singapore outlets you can expect sleek black tables with shiny grills in the middle, stellar meats and veggies, and attentive servers who are on hand to help you grill, wrap and cut your premium meats.

Why you should come here:

This is some of the best Korean food we have had here in Singapore. It’s a bit of a trek from the conglomerate of Korean restaurants in Tanjong Pagar, but it’s well worth the trip out to either Vivocity or The Star Vista. The vibe at both locales is very casual with lots of conversation going on over all the grilling, which makes Bornga a super chill spot to check out with friends or family during the week.

What we love:

The signature dish is the Woo Sam Gyup, which includes paper-thin slices of beef brisket marinated in a patented sauce that retains the natural colours and textures of the beef. The dish comes with a huge tray of vegetables for you to wrap with the meat, as well as scallions, garlic and soy bean sauce. Be sure to grill the scallions, garlic and a bit of raw kimchi, wrap it all up and stuff the whole thing in your mouth for maximum impact. It’s truly an explosion of flavours and textures.

We also love the Born-Ga Naeng Myun, which consists of springy buckwheat noodles topped with sliced beef, pear and cucumber slices for crunch, and a hard-boiled egg, all served in cold broth. Add vinegar and mustard and you’ve got a refreshing, light and savoury dish.

UJ Tidbit:

You have to order a minimum of two portions of meat, so we definitely recommend going with a group or at least a hungry dining companion. For lunch they have some super cheap deals including a set lunch for two people at $34.90++ that includes seven side dishes, barley tea and a house dessert.

About $40 a person excluding alcoholic beverages.
