Gordon Grill: A Classic Steakhouse at Goodwood Park Hotel

by URBAN JOURNEY

In today’s culinary climate of flustered fusion dishes and deconstructed degustation menus, there’s something to be said for classic fine dining fare. Gordon Grill has been holding fort in the Goodwood Park Hotel for over 50 years, and although at first glance it may seem slightly old-fashioned, that’s actually part of its charm. Look past the white linen tablecloths and servers dressed in formal beige blazers and you’ll find the food and service are surprisingly fresh and contemporary. In retrospect that may not be such a surprise; after all, you don’t stick around for more than half a century without adapting to the times.

Why you should come here:

Established in 1963, Gordon Grill has always aimed to be an immersive dining experience, and that’s exactly what you get even 50 years on; the quality of the food here is absolutely spot on. Attentive table-side service is key, so from start to finish the staff will make sure you’re well taken care of, whether it’s helping you choose a premium cut of meat from the signature meat trolley that they roll right up to your table, or pairing wines to go with each course.

What we love:

Gordon Grill has set lunch and dinner menus that are great value, but we prefer the a la carte route because there are so many fantastic appetizers, steaks, seafood dishes, and desserts to choose from. We highly recommend the cold angel hair pasta with marinated king crab, seaweed, and white truffle oil. The braised escargot with red wine jus, garlic puree, and mild spiced butter is also an absolute must. We love that they give you fresh bread on the side so you can soak up all the sauce. The meat tray looks a little intense, but you can choose your cut and how much you want, and they’ll carve it up right in front of you, then take it off to the kitchen to cook perfectly to your preferred taste. Definitely try the crêpe Suzette for dessert for more table-side entertainment.

UJ tidbit:

This is a great spot for dinner with the boys, or a group looking for a great meal and a fun dining experience. Corkage is $50 per bottle, but we suggest bringing in one of your own because you’ll want a solid red to go with your steak. They also do a great Sunday roast, which is perfect for families.

Damage:

Lunch will set you back about $70++ per person, while dinner could run anywhere from $100++ up to $200++.
