ORCHARD - What is it about meat on sticks that is so darn appealing? Maybe it’s the simplicity, the singular focus on one great ingredient done well, or the fact that we can use our hands to eat it rather than messing around with cutlery. Whatever it is, Kazu Sumiyaki uses this appeal to their advantage at their hole-in-the-wall yakitori joint in Cuppage Plaza that offers up seriously delicious smoky grilled skewers.
Why you should come here:
If you’re looking for a quality Japanese meal, this is a good bet. The vibe here is typical izakaya style with small tables set up for sharing sake and skewers and a few seats at the counter where you can watch the grill masters in action. The menu includes classic yaki offerings like Tebasaki (chicken wings), Tontoro Ringo (fatty pork jaw with apple), and Kurobuta Pork Belly, as well as a few modern items like Foie Gras skewers, Lamb Yaki, and Bacon-wrapped Scallop and Prawn.
What we love:
Situated in the maze of restaurants in Cuppage Plaza, this place really is a hidden gem. It’s got a good buzzy vibe, great service and excellent food. The Garlic Fried Rice is delicious, as are the Chicken Meatballs, Grilled Octopus with salt, Lobster Bacon Roll, Rice Cake wrapped in pork belly and beef with enoki mushroom, and the Fried Squid Legs when they have them.
Always make a reservation because this place gets packed pretty much every day of the week. Ask for a seat at the bar if there are just two or three of you. That way you can watch the chefs work the grills and see what goodies go out.
