We’re going to let you in on a little secret about one of our favorite hidden gems, located in the middle of nowhere but well worth the effort to get there. It’s got a laid-back underground vibe, fabulous fusion food and an enticing bar that is perfect for low-key drinks with your mates or chats with the regulars who frequent the place. Welcome to Kilo, one of Singapore’s coolest food and watering dens.
To get to Kilo, make your way to Kampong Bugis, head to the Sam Tat building next to the Kallang River and take the elevator to the 2nd floor of Ture. You may be unimpressed by the scenery so far but when the elevator doors open, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what greets you. Think smooth concrete floors, soft lighting, wooden chairs and glass-topped tables, abstract paintings on the walls and wide-open windows that allow the breeze to come in so no A/C is needed.
Owners Javiar Perez and Sharon Lee planned the original menu with Japanese-influenced dishes but nowadays, they are constantly reinventing and adding quirky twists to dishes that take their inspiration from Thai, Italian and even South American cuisine. This means there are plenty of enticing appetizers to share, seafood galore and a great selection of wines.
Why you should come here
If you’re looking for a dining experience a little different from the norm, Kilo is the place to go.
We’re always taken by the simple yet chic decor here and the cool tunes playing in the background. We like to start off at one of the cosy tables for dinner and then head back to the chilled bar in the back right corner for after-dinner drinks. The tables are always clean and clutter-free, save for a jar with forks, spoons and hawker-style plastic chopsticks. And the food is just delicious!
What We Love
Really, what's not to love? We really enjoy heading here with a bunch of people and ordering appetizers to share. Our favorites are the the Seafood Ceviche, and the Slow Cooked Beef Shortribs Just with Salt and Pepper. You never feel rushed here as the ambiance is laid back and friendly and the minimalist decor really allows you to focus on the great food.
On our last trip, we started with Beetroot salad made with pecans, arugula and feta yoghurt, which was fresh and tasty. We also indulged in our favorite, the Seafood Ceviche with Tuna, Salmon and Octopus ($19) – fresh, flavourfu, and the marinade of lime juice, shoyu and fish sauce added a great kick.
Mains here include the Squid Ink Rice which gains rave reviews from diners, the eclectic Angel Hair with Cream of Ebiko ($21) and the to-die-for BBQ Pork Riblets which melt in your mouth.
$40++ per person excluding alcoholic beverages.
