Botanist: Contemporary Brunch Fare on Neil Road

by URBAN JOURNEY
Neil Road has a new brunch spot brought to us by the people behind Pacamara Boutique Coffee Roasters and Alchemy, and it’s already winning big points with the brunch and lunch crowds. The coffee is roasted in house by Knockhouse Supply Co., which also happens to be right upstairs, and the menu boasts classic brunch dishes, healthy options and heartier stick-to-your-bones fare.

Why you should come here:

The minimalist interiors are none too exciting, but the outdoor patio features lush vertical gardens, grates that allow natural light to peek through and wooden communal tables with moveable stools, which creates a casual setting where you can chill with a coffee and some good eats. Also, the all-day breakfast and lunch dishes come in pretty substantial portions, which is a refreshing change from so many other brunch spots.

What we love:

This is a really cute cafe with a lovely outdoor terrace that is covered so it doesn’t get too hot. The coffee is excellent, as the beans are top quality and roasted fresh right on site. If you’re into big bold flavours with hints of smooth chocolate, then you’ll love the cuppas here. Plus the food is made with quality ingredients and consistently executed well.

For breakfast or brunch, the Baked Eggs with chorizo Iberico, bacon, feta cheese and tomato relish are a good bet, as are the Maple Pancakes infused with maple syrup and topped with creme fraiche, nuts, bacon and fresh berries. Other options that caught our eye were the Corn Fritters with tomato salsa, hummus, guac, poached eggs and spinach, and the Slow-cooked Beef Cheek with truffle mash and roasted vegetables.

UJ Tidbit:

If you’re feeling really indulgent add a side of truffle fries to your order, or at least get some to share at the table because they’re pretty bomb. On the other hand, if you’re looking to go a bit lighter you can opt for multigrain bread with your breakfast dishes or go for one of their fresh salads.

One thing to note is that although The Botanist has an address on Neil Road you actually enter through an alley on the side of the shophouse. Just look for the green and white door in the middle of the big slinky mural on the side of the building.

Damage:

About $25 for a coffee and a meal.
