Who doesn’t love Emerald Hill with its enclave of easy and approachable bars that always get packed out on the weekends? Alley Bar is one of our favourites out of the bunch because the decor is chic, the music is groovy and they mix up some mean cocktails. Spend some time chatting with the bartenders and other tipplers at the 15-metre black terrazzo bar or grab a one of the tables in the spacious seating area in front of the huge gilded mirror for a more relaxed sit-down session.
Why you should come here:
Step into the long dimly-lit alleyway of a space and you’ll find a soaring vaulted ceiling, hanging lantern style lights, a long bar that’s usually bustling and plenty of cosy candlelit tables. The crowd here is usually a pretty cool mix of peeps who come for the good vibes, cool lounge atmosphere and great eats and drinks. It may start off pretty low-key, but the later it gets, the more people pour in looking for after-dinner and late-night drinks.
What we love:
Alley Bar has a huge drinks list with something to suit all tastes including specialty martinis, single malts, sake, shochu and wines. The prices are pretty reasonable, especially during happy hour, and they have tempting eats to go with the drinks. If you just want something to nibble on, they have options like Mixed Ham Plate with jamón Ibérico, Serrano Gran Reserva Sin Hueso, and prosciutto di Parma with pickled onions and chillis and the Cheese Plate with al manchego curado, camembert, gorgonzola with quince paste and lavash flatbread.
UJ Tidbit:
Happy hour kicks off daily at 5pm with house pours for $6++, select martinis for $9.90++, draught beers for $10.90++, three bottles of beer for $22++ and two pints of Guinness for $20++. Get in early though because happy hour only runs until 9pm.
Damage:
Non-happy hour prices for cocktails range from $18++ to $20++ and main dishes hover around the $20++ to $25++ mark.
