A Secret Drinking Den You Need to Know About

by URBAN JOURNEY

The Proof Flat has occupied 43A Hong Kong Street for just over a year and is well known for being a top supplier of whisky, gin, vodka, brandy, and otherpotent liqueurs in Singapore. While you can swing by any time to browse and shop the boozy bounty, we recently checked out one of its brilliant tasting sessions with a crew of UrbanJourney readers and had a ball sipping spirits and learning more about the origins of mother’s ruin. If you’re looking for a fun way to start yourbirthday celebrations, date night, or just because, The Proof Flat is well worth a visit. Here’s why we’ll be returning…

If Don Draper had a Singaporean bolthole, we imagine it would look like The Proof Flat. The seriously stylish interior will make you want to move in. The main ‘living’ area is decked out with huge leather sofas, wooden panelling, and quirky details, while at the rear of the flat you’ll find a secret drinks library, plus a few other nooks containing surprises we won’t ruin. Sophisticated yes, stuffy no; whether you’re coming to shop or stopping by for a masterclass, expect to be welcomed like an old pal by the friendly team.

We enjoyed a gin masterclass and tasting sesh with one of the resident experts and had a blast. Our host was a total pro and took us on a whirlwind gin journey from its Dutch origins through its notorious rise to popularity in 19th century Britain, all the way to the present day and its current resurgence as the spirit du jour. He was knowledgeable, funny, and kept us engaged for the whole session. As he talked we were able to sample three types of gin to help us understand the distinct flavour profiles of different varieties. Tasty nibbles were also circulating the room ensuring we kept our stomachs well lined. And post chat, divine gin-based cocktails were whipped up for us to sample.

If gin ain’t your bag, fret not. The Proof Flat runs regular events championing a variety of cocktails and spirits. Next up is a celebration of all things Negroni, and for the bold, a deep-dive into the wonderful world of tequila.Check ‘em both out here.

The sessions typically run on Friday nights between 6pm and 8pm, so be sure to book a table at one of Hong Kong Street’s myriad restaurants for dinner. Our top picks areAmo,Vasco, or Baccanalia Kitchen. A perfect way to start the weekend? You betcha!
