The Auld Alliance

by URBAN JOURNEY

Whisky connoisseurs in the know spend their evenings at The Auld Alliance where there are over 1,500 whiskies on offer including Scottish single malts, American variations like rye and bourbon, rare bottles that date back to the 19th century, and one of the largest Japanese whisky collections outside of Japan. Whether you’re a seasoned whisky sipper or a newbie looking to broaden your drinking repertoire, The Auld Alliance is a sleek spot for a dram or two.

Why you should come here:

Step inside The Auld Alliance and its almost like you’ve walked into a posh private library, except instead of books on the shelves there are just rows upon rows of bottles. Sink into one of the supple leather sofas and have a read through their 70-page menu, which features all the usual whisky names like Macallan, Oban and Laphroaig, as well as lesser-known names that are highly sought after by serious whisky drinkers.

What we love:

Despite the distinguished decor and the seriousness with which these guys take their drinks, the service here is anything but stuffy. The staff are well-versed in the menu and happy to help out with suggestions to suit your tastes and budget, and the prices aren’t actually that steep for the more common orders. However, if you do have the cash to splash out, you could really go to town here with some amazing tipples by the glass and the bottle like The Glenlivet 1955 27 Years Old Sherry Cask by Silvano Samaroli and the Bowmore 1966 Bouquet.

UJ Tidbit:

If you’re into whisky, be sure to follow these guys on Facebook because owner and avid whisky collector Emmanuel Dron is always reaching into his stash to pull out unique bottles to sell by the glass, and you definitely don’t want to miss out on some of the openings.

We should also note that The Auld Alliance does not sell food, so you may want to grab a bite before you come.

Damage:

Drams of whisky start at $14++.
