The Secret Mermaid

by URBAN JOURNEY
True to it’s name, The Secret Mermaid is a tiny hidden watering hole tucked into a basement corner of Ocean Finance Centre. Inside you’ll find an eight seater bar facing shelves upon shelves of bottles including a huge selection of small-batch American craft spirits like gins, whiskies, rums, vodkas and tequilas. Behind the bar Kelly D’Cruz whips up custom concoctions like the Spiced Blueberry Mojito and the Liang Xiao Wu Chai with Chai infused vodka shaken with black tea syrup and citrus with a dash of Chinese bitters.

Why you should come here:

This is a good spot to seek out if you’re looking for something a bit different, as the atmosphere is intimate and there are tons of tipples that you won’t find anywhere else in the city. Bottles include Indigenous Apple Vodka with about eighty apples in every bottle that are pressed into cider, fermented and then distilled twice, the award-winning KOVAL Distillery dry gin, and Catoctin Creek Distilling Company’s Rabble Rouser Rye, of which only 150 bottles were made.

What we love:

You can get damn good cocktails at $14++, which is a good price compared to other bars around town. For every cocktail ordered you get a serving of crispy Tator Tots, which is pretty cool in our books. And if you’re looking for more bites to soak up all that booze, they also offer handheld eats like the Truffle Mushroom Poutine Fries, Foie Gras Grilled Sandwich and the Devilled Eggs with wasabi and nori.

UJ Tidbit:

They have a convivial happy hour every day where craft beers go for $11++, which is a super competitive price for the CBD area. Their basement location in the OFC is a bit funny, but it’s worth seeking out if you like your cocktail bars. Do order the Negroni. Highly recommended.

Damage:

Cocktails start at $14++
