Chye Seng Huat Hardware

Chye Seng Huat, which means, ‘to flourish again’ was a name conceived by Papa Palheta and the landlords of the building. You can take that meaning however you want. The building, a beautifully preserved art-deco shophouse, has flourished and once you leave this coffee joint, you’ll feel that way too.

Why you should come here:

If you’re into coffees, it’s a very unique spot to experience. It’s split up into Coffee Land (a Candy Land for the adults) where we found The Roastery, a Coffee Shop, and C-Platform (the coffee school).

The Roastery is where you’ll be able to witness the transformation of coffee beans, which is a great prelude to the Coffee Shop where you can enjoy delicious and simple coffee drinks. I opted for the ‘Espresso + Milk’ – which can be prepared however you like (flat white, cappucino, etc). The cup of coffee I had was actually 1/4 of the size of my usual start to the day, but the flavor was spot on and the coffee was strong.

The interiors of the coffee shop are warm: think dark and light wood, black accents, high ceilings, and hints of gold, which make for a welcoming ambiance. They’ve even got a massive wall of coffee products and accessories, including several different machines for that perfect cup of joe and Papa Palheta coffee beans.

After spending a morning, afternoon, or all day downstairs, be sure to head upstairs to C-Platform, which is where you can check out many coffee gadgets and where they hold special coffee preparation classes.

What we love:

Come during the weekday as it won’t be as busy, especially in the mornings. Depending on where you live, it could be a little far out but it’s definitely worth the trip, especially for the Pancake Stack and cappuccino.

This is not just an ordinary coffee shop, but a full-on experience. You may just find yourself never wanting to leave.
