Conscious living is the new buzz phrase here in Singapore, and we think it’s absolutely fantastic. After all, we should all be doing our part to make our island and our world a better place. The Social Space champions this movement with amulti-concept lifestyle storethat encourages people to be more socially conscious in our daily lives. The space includes acool cafeserving healthy, sustainable eats, a fair trade retail shop that sells eco-friendly products, and a socially conscious nail salon that helps underprivileged women.
Our experience
The space itself is bright and inviting with floor-to-ceiling glass windows that let natural light in, colourful murals and tiles, and tropical-chic rattan chairs with turquoise cushions. On one side you have the cafe, which serves up healthy smoothie bowls, cakes, and open-faced toasts along with a great selection of organic teas and coffees. On the other side is the retail shop where you can grab eco-friendly goods like reusable coffee cups made from bamboo fibre, metal straws, hand-woven clutches, and chemical-free cleaning products.
Head next door and you find The Nail Social, a nail salon that helps underprivileged women learn skills so they can eventually become self-sufficient. In fact, the nail salon was how The Social Space came to be, as the multi-concept lifestyle store developed as a way to provide different career opportunities to people who have difficulties gaining employment due to circumstances beyond their control. You’ll also find a florist next to the nail salon where you can pick up beautiful bouquets of dried flowers.
Would we come back?
Absolutely. We actually work close by, so we often pop in for a mid-afternoon break and some healthy snacks. Our faves from the menu include the Berry Berry Good smoothie bowl with raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, cranberries, banana, coconut milk and honey and the Chamomile Lavender Latte. The shop also has some pretty sweet housewares and eco-friendly fashion finds.
UJ Tidbit:
The Social Space is all about minimising waste, so you’ll find that many of their products come with little to no packaging. If you’re planning on picking up some goods, we suggest bringing your own bag or container. That being said, they can hook you up with bottles for things like all-natural liquid soaps. Bring your bottles back to the refillery to stock up again when you run out. All the cold brew coffee and tea bottles can also be returned for recycling.
Damage:
Toasts start at $7++ for a single slice and $12++ for double slices. Coffees and teas start at $6++.
