Akashi

by URBAN JOURNEY

Akashi has three locations across the city, each one serving up a wide variety of tasty Japanese fare like sushi and sashimi made with fresh fish flown in daily from Tsukiji Market, silky tofu with creamy century eggs, whole grilled kinki fish, and chirashi rice bowls filled with tempting toppings like tuna belly and sea urchin. Their most popular branch is at Paragon Shopping Centre, although The Orchard Parade Hotel locale often packs out too and prides itself on having the longest sushi bar in Singapore.

Why you should come here:

Not super cheap, but not super expensive either, Akashi is a good bet when you’re in the mood for a mid-range sushi meal. Their lunch and dinner sets are particularly good value and come with your choice of plump pieces of nigiri or sushi, green tea soba noodles, or sukiyaki with thin slices of beef served over rice with soup and fresh fruit on the side. If you’re going a la carte, try the melt-in-your-mouth Salmon Belly Aburi Sushi.

What we love:

Akashi is an accessible and an easy go-to spot for us when we want good sushi but don’t want to break the bank. Coveted for their consistency, they also tick all the right boxes for their superb service, speedy delivery and quality ingredients. We love the price points for the lunch and dinner sets, although if you don’t mind splashing out, there are plenty of enticing options on the la carte menu too.

UJ Tidbit:

If you’ve got time to spare and money is not an issue, go for the omakase experience and let the chef surprise you with imaginative creations of whatever is freshest and in season. This could be anything from buttery otoro or flounder fin sashimi, juicy Hokkaido scallops in an earthy peanut sesame sauce, or tender Wagyu beef with rice, omelette and seaweed.

Damage:

Lunch sets ring in at about $15 – $25, while dinner sets go for about $20 – $30. If you’re going a la carte or omakase style, you could easily spend anywhere between $150 – $250 not including booze.
