In the midst of all this Michelin hoo-ha, we at Urban Journey still curate our restaurant picks based on the best food, quality and overall experience, which includes ambiance, service, value for money and good vibes. For us, Michelin is not necessarily our culinary bible when we’re choosing where to eat around town. Having said that, we do agree with some of their choices, although we were a little miffed that Terra lost their star. Out of all the Michelin-starred restaurants around town, these are the ones that we think stand out from the rest and the ones that we personally recommend.
Crystal Jade Golden Palace
When it comes to upscale Chinese food, Crystal Jade Golden Palace is definitely at the top of our list. As soon as you step inside the elegant high-ceilinged dining room, you know you’re in for a treat as the decor is contemporary and sleek without being stuffy, the service is polished and professional, and the menu boasts decadent Teochew and Cantonese dishes like the Chilled Yellow Cream Crab in Teochew style, Stir-Fried Ramen with Lobster in XO Sauce, and Roasted Suckling Pig with Black Truffle Pearl Rice. We suggest coming here for a corporate lunch, a leisurely dim sum brunch, or a group celebration with friends and family.

The Kitchen at Bacchanalia
With just 36 seats set within arm’s reach of the open kitchen, The Kitchen at Bacchanalia gives guests the opportunity to get up close and personal with the chefs as they prepare innovative contemporary French dishes with Asian twists using top-quality, locally grown ingredients. We weren’t surprised to learn that they earned a Michelin star last year, as the restaurant has been earning prestigious accolades ever since they opened. If it’s an intimate dining experience and creative gourmet cuisine you’re after, then The Kitchen at Bacchanalia is definitely worth checking out.

At Meta, chef Sun Kim (formerly of Waku Ghin in Singapore and Tetsuya’s in Sydney) is all about using fresh, seasonal ingredients to create modern European dishes with vibrant Asian flavours. Take for example their summer menu with inventive offerings like the Octopus with XO sauce, sunchoke and radicchio and the Iberico Pork Pluma with potato, kailan and kimchi. Be sure to try their cocktails too because they’ve got some pretty creative concoctions like the Rising Sun with vodka, kimchi juice, egg whites and pear.

Shinji by Kanesaka
Chef Shinji Kanesaka seems to be somewhat of a Michelin star collector, as his original restaurant in Tokyo, Sushi Kanesaka, has two stars, and now each of his two Singapore ventures have earned their own single stars. No matter which Shinji by Kanesaka venue you choose, you can expect the highest quality fresh seafood flown in from Tsukiji Market and artfully prepared in the Edomae style by true sushi masters who have spent years honing their craft. Although the omakase set menus are pricey, we believe the whole experience is worth every penny.

Ginza Sushi Ichi
Sushi Ichi is another high-end sushi spot that offers an authentic Japanese atmosphere and Edomae style sushi made with top-notch ingredients that are flown in from Tsukiji Market five times a week. Grab a seat at the counter made from a 300-year-old cypress tree, and watch as owner and chef Masakazu Ishibashi (a.k.a Masa) creates gorgeous sashimi and sushi plates that taste as good as they look. Afterwards you can retire to their sleek sake lounge next door for a few postprandial tipples.
