Luke’s Oyster Bar & Chop House
Like their flagship location on Gemmill Lane, Luke’s at The Heeren offers freshly shucked oysters and superb steaks, but the vibe here is a bit more urban and the space seems a bit more hidden away, making this one of our favourite almost-secret gems. Head up to the third floor of The Heeren and grab a seat at the bar to watch the hustle and bustle of Orchard below with a glass of bubbles in hand. And while you’re there, it would be silly not to try one of their fantastic creations from the land or the sea.

Italian
Modesto’s
There is something to be said for simplicity, like the easy-going vibe at Modesto’s where you can relax on the outdoor patio with a few beers and dig into rustic Italian fare like wood-fired pizzas and handmade pastas. Inside you’ll find a somewhat more elegant dining room with tablecloths and soft lighting, but the atmosphere is still completely amiable. They also have occasional sports screenings, making this a good place to catch the game while enjoying great food.

Sandwiches & Smoothies
Super fresh juices? Check. High energy servers who love putting on the theatrics? Check. Healthy sandwiches and breakfast ‘hand meals’? Check again. There are so many good reasons to come here any time of day. Come in the morning to grab a quick pick-me-up coffee and a light bite, or re-energize in the middle of the day with a guilt-free sammie and a juice. The juices all have cheeky names too like the Sex Me Up, Stress Down and Hangover Heaven.

Calling all gyoza fans—this is THE spot in town to gorge yourself on delicious dumplings filled with your choice of pork, vegetables or prawns and encased in special wrappers flown in from Japan. Brought to us by the Akashi group, Gyoza-ya gets it right every time with their consistently good pan-fried or boiled gyoza, drizzled in sweet sauce or simmered in stock. Ippudo
There is a reason that people flock to Ippudo locations all over the city, mainly because their Hakata-style ramen is simply sublime. Think soft, springy noodles in a slightly spicy and savoury miso broth topped with thick slices of pork belly, spring onions and lashings of garlic oil. Just keep in mind that the place tends to get packed with other ramen fans, so you may want to come outside of peak times to grab a table all to yourself.

Suju Japanese Restaurant
Chef Suju Masayuki started out with a small restaurant in Karuizawa, Nagano in 2005 that focused on traditional Japanese cuisine using staples like brown rice, fresh fish and miso. His first restaurant saw such wild success that he has since gone on to open six restaurants and shops in Japan and one here in Singapore at Mandarin Gallery.
