There’s no guessing game when it comes to the specialty at Tonkatsu by Ma Maison, as the name clearly states that they’re all about tonkatsu, a Japanese comfort food dish of crispy golden fried pork cutlet. Here you can opt for standard pork loin or premium cuts, and pile on the free-flow sides like miso soup, white or multigrain rice and shredded cabbage salad.
Why you should come here:
Come for the tonkatsu in all it’s deep-fried porky goodness. You know you want it. They’ve also got some great starters to dig into while you’re waiting for your tonkatsu like deep-fried jumbo prawns and fried oysters. It may not be the healthiest fare, but you’ll forget all about the calories as soon as you bite into one of these crunchy golden treats. As a bonus, every table comes with sweet and spicy dipping sauce to drizzle over your crispy treats and sesame dressing for the cabbage salad.
What we love:
The Rosu Katsu meal is your standard tonkatsu set menu with fried pork loin and the sides that come with every meal, but if you really want to kick it up a notch flavour-wise, go for the Tokusen Kurobuta Rosu Katsu set with special black pork loin marbled with fat, or the Hungarian Mangalica Rosu Katsu. The Mamenton Set is also a good deal as you get fried pork loin, a pork fillet, fried prawns, pickled radish, and silky somen noodles in a dashi broth.
UJ Tidbit:
The queues can get quite long here, especially around peak lunch and dinner times when you could be waiting up to 45 minutes for a table. During these times the service can also be a bit scattered. If you want to slide right in and grab the attention of the servers, it’s better to come either before or after the rush.
Damage:
