Check Out These Hot New Spots Opening Up as Great World City Revamps

by Steph

Great World City is undergoing a major revamp, which is great news for shoppers in the River Valley hood. The $50 million renovations began in April of last year and will continue until 2021 around the same time that the new Great World MRT station opens. The facelift includes new floors, skylights, dual-level retail pods and additional entrances, plus tons of new retail and F&B options. New tenants are already opening up shop and we can’t wait to check them out. Here are a few that we have on our radar.

Supermarkets

SCOOP Whole Foods

Slated to open on February 5th, SCOOP Whole Foods is an Australian supermarket that specialises in organic products and sustainable goods sourced from responsible suppliers. Bring your own containers or use their recyclable paper and cloth bags to fill up on bulk foods like nuts, grains, beans, chocolate, tea and dried fruits. They also have a fermentary where you can grab goods like kimchi and kombucha, and a section where you can pick up chemical-free soaps, beauty products and cleansers.

Meidi-Ya Supermarket

The second outlet of this popular Japanese supermarket has a few features that set it apart from other grocery stores. First of all, it showcases mainly Japanese products flown in directly like fresh fish and veggies, aged meats, rice and sake. Secondly, it has a plaza dedicated only to Hokkaido eats like cream cheese pies and fruit pops. Finally, the store has a 40-seater dining section where you can grab Japanese bites like steaming bowls of ramen from Sapporo Nishiyama Ramen.

The Source Bulk Foods

The Source is another bulk food store from Australia that promotes a zero-waste lifestyle. Bring your own containers or use their paper bags and glass jars to measure out healthy snacks like nuts and dried fruits, kombucha in a variety of flavours, staples like lentils, beans and rice, and much more. Use their nut butter machine to grind up your favourite nuts with superfood powders for extra colour and oomph. We love the pre-mixed jars that you can just add water to at home like the curry coconut lentil soup.

Each perfectly pinched soup dumpling has exactly 18 folds and is filled with a savoury broth that complements the fillings. The best way to eat them is with a splash of soy sauce and vinegar with shredded ginger on top. Other must-try dishes include the noodles in a spicy sauce and steamed chili crab and pork buns.
