Thanying

by URBAN JOURNEY
Thanying opened its doors in 1988 and still draws in the crowds, which makes it one of Singapore’s oldest Thai restaurants and clearly a long-time favourite. The interior is spacious with plenty of seating for couples and groups, and the decor veers on the ornate side with richly patterned upholstery on cushy chairs, crisp linens on the tables, and chandeliers emitting a soft glow. The menu focuses on royal Thai cuisine, so you’ll find the dishes to be just as elaborate as the decor with plenty of premium ingredients, fragrant herbs and a good kick of spice.

Why you should come here:

You may pay top price for the experience, but Thanying is definitely worth it because the food is excellent quality and expertly prepared, and the service is old school Thai, so it’s quick and efficient, yet warm and welcoming at the same time. This is a great place to take clients when they are in town and looking for something a little bit different than the usual Chinese and modern gastronomy options. This is also a great spot for families looking to sit down to a delicious Sunday lunch.

What we love:

Our mouths are already watering just thinking of the food. The flavours here are seriously spot-on with a focus on fresh herbs like lemongrass, basil and mint, as well as creamy coconut milk curries, spicy chicken dishes and whole steamed fish. We hear that the chef previously worked for the royal Thai family, so it makes sense that the food is of such a high caliber and authentically Thai. Some of our go-to dishes are the Green Chicken Curry, Beef Salad, Pineapple Fried Rice and Pad Thai.

UJ Tidbit:

They don’t tone down the spice here for non-Thai palates, so if you’re not good with heat then we suggest asking the kitchen to make it mild when you place your order. However, if you’re a fiery chilli fanatic, then you’ll be happy to know that most of the dishes come with sides of spicy chilli sauce.

Damage:

About $50 a person without alcoholic beverages.
