Bahamas is located north of Cuba, northwest of Hispaniola and Turks and Caicos Island, and southeast of Florida. Bahamas has more than 3000 cays, islands and islets in the Atlantic Ocean.

Weather and climate in the Bahamas

Bahamas has a sub-tropical climate which means moderate rainfall and high average temperatures. Average daily temperatures range from 17C (63F) to 32C (90F). May through October are considered summer months.

Getting to the Bahamas

There are 21 international airports in the Bahamas and flights come in daily from the US and Canada. Flights also come in from Panama, UK and seasonally from Europe. The biggest airport is located on New Providence island.

Getting around the Bahamas

The best way to get around the Bahamas is by taxi or cars, which can be rented. If you are traveling between the islands, this is best done by inter-island flights. Domestic airlines include Bahamasair, Flamingo Air and Southern Air.

Things to do in the Bahamas

  • Relax at Pink Sands Beach, which is one of the most unique beaches in the world. Its rose colored sand comes from foraminifera, a marina animal with a red shell, which when crushed, mixes with the white sand to form its color.
  • Disney lovers, head to Castaway Cay, via Disney and Caribbean cruise lines. This is Disney’s private island.
  • Staniel Cay is a small island located in the Exuma Cays. Here you can find Pig Beach – the island gets it name from Exuma pigs. Pigs, stray goats and cats are the islands only inhabitants.It is also home to the underwater caves, Thunderball Grotto, which was featured in the James Bond film, Thunderball.
  • Climb the 66 Steps of the Queens Staircase, which was built by enslaved Africans between 1793-1794. The stairs were carved out of solid rock as a means of defense but also function. The top of the stairs have panoramic views of Nassau.
  • Explore Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, which covers 64 square miles (165 square kilometers). It features coral reef, mangrove forests and diverse marine ecosystems. Diving, snorkeling, paddle boarding and kayaking are all various ways to explore the reserve.
  • Lucayan National Park is named after the indigenous people of the Bahamas, the Lucayan. The park covers 40 acres and is home to mangroves, beaches and pine forests.

Major Events in the Bahamas

  • The Bahamas Junkanoo Festival takes place every year on Dec 26 and on New Years Day. It’s a cultural festival and its highlights include street parades, costumes, music, dance and revelry.
  • The All Andros Crab Fest is held annually every June and it celebrates crab. There are plenty of land crabs that come out during rainy season and this festival celebrates this. Andros Island is referred to “The Land of the Crabs”
  • Every June, celebrate the worlds sweetest pineapples at The Eleuthera Pineapple FestivalThe festival celebrates and appreciates the farmers who work hard to harvest the delicious fruits.
  • Every July, celebrate Bahamian culture at the annual summer festival Goomsbay. Enjoy live music, dance and local delicacies.
  • Fox Hill Day Festival is the oldest festival in the country. It commemorates the emancipation of slavery in 1838 and is held on every second Tuesday of August annually.
  • Join visitors and locals at McClean’s Town Conch Cracking Festival who are after the Bahamian-designed conch trophy, that is awarded to the best Conch Crackers. Attendees can also enjoy a full day of various activities and of course delicious conch dishes. The event is held every November.
  • Bahamas International Film Festival is held in Nassau every December. The film festival spans over many days and includes film screenings, panels, workshops and events.
