THE SCOOP: Singapore’s historic Kampong Glam is the place to be from now until July 14 because the neighbourhood is kicking off with tons of fun events as part of GSS: Experience Singapore. Experience Kampong Gelam is a collaboration between the Singapore Retailers Association (SRA) and One Kampong Gelam and it aims to highlight the unique aspects that make this community so vibrant.
Immerse yourself in the multicultural history of the hood and get a taste of both the traditional and modern on a fascinating KG Precinct Tour that will take you to top sightseeing spots and give you the chance to interact with business owners to find out more about their products, services and stories. Afterwards you can fuel up on tasty local fare served out of colourful food trucks.
Art enthusiasts will love Gelam Gallery, Singapore’s first outdoor gallery showcasing the works of 25 artists, as well as the Aliwal Night Crawl Performance on July 13 when artists will present their interpretations of Kampong Glam’s past and present on Kandahar Street.
And of course shopping is an absolute must! Head to the Lifestyle Bazaar for locally made handicrafts, curios, home decor and fashion. We’re especially fond of social enterprise Elephant Parade, which runs the world’s largest art exhibition of elephant statues. Pick up a replica elephant to take home and 20% of the profits will be donated to elephant welfare and conservation projects.
